Prerequisites for Lifeguarding 

Certifications

  • CPR certification. New hires are not required to have a CPR certification prior to hiring but must obtain certification before beach start date. (Acceptable certifications recognized and required for Surf Lifesaving are as followed: American Red Cross, ASHI, American Heart Association, American Safety and Health Institute, National Safety Council, Emergency Care and Safety Institute, EMS Safety Services, Inc.)
  • Advanced First Aid Certification. New hires are not required to have an Advance First Aid certification prior to hiring but must obtain certification before your first day of work. (Acceptable certifications recognized and required for Surf Lifesaving are as followed: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, ASHI, American Safety and Health Institute, National Safety Council, Emergency Care and Safety Institute, EMS Safety Services, Inc.)
  • Emergency Medical Responder Certification (Beach Lifeguard Only) New hires are not required to have an EMR certification prior to hiring but must obtain certification before your first day of work. (Acceptable certifications recognized and required for Surf Lifesaving are as followed: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, ASHI, American Safety and Health Institute, National Safety Council, Emergency Care and Safety Institute, EMS Safety Services, Inc.)
  • Pool certification (if applying for a pool guard position)
  • All employees will keep updated with certifications and make sure they are not expired.

Time and Dates of Work

  • Commit to working from Memorial Day through the end of the season.
  • Parttime or Fulltime opportunities 
  • Employees  returning to college before Labor Day may end their season seven days before the start of class.
  • All hires must attend a preseason meeting to be held on May 23rd 2024
  • New hires and current guards who have not worked at Allenhurst over the past 3 summers will attend the Rookie & Review Training Program. Dates and Times TBD
  • Work day starts promptly at 9:00am and will go to 6pm
    • Guards working late will be required to stay till 7pm
    • One hour lunch break that will be coordinated by the crew chiefs in order to maintain proper and effective coverage.
    • Deviations from this schedule can be arranged and will be discussed on an individual basis.
    • There will be an adjusted schedule for the designated late persons that day.
    • Pool lifeguards will work a varied schedule to meet the needs of pool operation hours.
    • Anyone who abandons their post while on duty can be fired.

Swim and Run Test

  • Must complete a 500-­‐meter swim test in less than 10 minutes of time if they are to be considered for hire or rehire.
    • This will be performed each year for every lifeguard.
    • This will be performed each month for every active lifeguard.
  • Run 1 mile in under 10:00 minutes, beach guards only.
    • This will be performed each year for every lifeguard.
    • This will be performed each month for every active lifeguard.
  • Workouts are mandatory (unless due to special circumstances.)
    • Ocean swims (all conditions)
    • Beach runs
    • Rowing
    • Kayaking
    • Surf paddling 
    • Weight training
    • And additional physical activities
